Der Fürst von Thurn und Taxis ersteigerte diese
Brosche 1982, für seine Frau Gloria, im Bild trägt die
Füstin das Schmuckstück an einer Kette als Collier.
Diese grosse Smaragdbrosche gehörte ehemals
Elisabeth ( Marie Caroline Victorie ) Prinzessin von Preussen (1815-1885),
Cousine ersten Grades des regierenden Königs, die mit Prinz
Karl von Hessen Darmstadt verheiratet war und auch die Darmstädter
Madonna, eines der Prunkstück des Hauses Hessen, mit in die
Ehe brachte.
Ihr Mann war Bruder und Nachfolger des Grossherzogs von Hessen-Darmstadt.
Ihr Sohn Ludwig, der spätere Grossherzog Ludwig IV von Hessen
und Rhein (1837-1892) heiratete die zweite Tochter von Queen Victoria
von England, Prinzessin Alice (1843-1878).
Prinzessin Elisabeth hinterlies dieses Juwel ihrer Enkelin Prinzessin
Victoria von Hessen (1863 - 1950) der ältesten Tochter von
Ludwig und Alice. 1884 ehelichte Victoria den Prinz Ludwig von Battenberg
(1854-1921), der seinen Namen 1917 in Mountbatten wechselte und
sie so zur ersten Marquess of Milford Haven wurde.
Leider ist keine Abbildung der Prinzessin mit dem Schmuckstück
erhalten, hatte sie doch den Grossteil ihres Schmucks bei ihrer
Schwester Alexandra der Zarin von Rußland in Petersburg deponiert
als die Revolution ausbrach und die Juwelen unwiederbringlich verloren
gingen.
Victorias älteste Tochter Prinzessin Alice von Battenberg (1885-1969)
heiratete Prinz Andreas von Griechenland und Dänemark (1882-1944);
deren Sohn Prinz Philip wurde Herzog von Edinburgh durch seine Heirat
1947 mit der zukünftigen Königin Elizabeth II von England

Das Smaragd-Diamant-Corsage Schmuck ging an Louise (1889-1965) der
zweiten Tochter des Marquess and Marchioness of Milford Haven, die
1923 den König Gustaf VI.Adolf von Schweden (1882-1973) heiratete,
sie war seine 2. Frau und sie hatten keine gemeinsamen Kinder. Ein

Emerald and Diamond Corsage Ornament ca 1830
This antique emerald an diamond pendant brooch, the
rectangular emerald and circular-cut diamond cluster centre in diamond
foliage surround set with one square, one pear-shaped and two circular-cut
emeralds, suspending two small rectangular emerald and diamond drops
and three larger pear-shaped emeralds and diamond pendants, all
detachable, mounted in silver and gold, in open-backed setting ca
1830. The centre rosette is also detachable.
The Princess of Thurn and Taxis wore this jewel as
a pendant on a chain in form of a necklace, above.
The emerald and diamond corsage ornament, originally belonged to Elisabeth
(1815-1885) Princess Karl of Hessen-Darmstadt, born Princess of Prussia,
who left it to her grand-daughter Victoria (sister of Alexandra of
Hessen, later the Empress of Russia), later to become the first Marchioness
of Milford Haven. She in turn left it to her daughter, Queen Louise
of Sweden. A picture of

The Fürst of Thurn and Taxis bought this item
for his wife, Princess Gloria in 1982, from the descent of the Queen
and sold it again after 10 years.
Prince Johannes of Thurn and Taxis acquired it probably,
also for its family connections. Two are worth noting: he was maternally
descended (through his grandmother the Archduchess Margarete of
Austria) from Queen Victoria´s cousin Prince August of Saxe-Coburg
and Gotha, Duke in Saxony; Queen Victoria´s mother was a Princess
of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, as was her husband Prince Albert.
Princess Alice of Hesse was thus strongly imbued with Saxe-Coburg
genes.
Another Royal connection came through Therese, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz,
the wife of Prince Carl Alexander von Thurn und Taxis. She was the
niece of King Georg III´s Queen, Charlotte, of whose numerous
progeny Edward, Duke of Kent (1767-1820) married the widowed Princess
of Leiningen and was father of the future Queen Victoria.
