During Edward's term as Governor of the Bahamas (18 August
1940 28 July 1945), Wallis was entitled to be known as Her Excellency.
However, this was subsumed by the superior appellation Her Grace, to
which she was entitled as a Duchess.
Edward could not accept that his wife had been denied the style Her
Royal Highness, and she was unofficially styled within their own household
as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Windsor. Throughout their relationship,
he showered her with amazing jewels, especially after their marriage
as it seemed as though he was trying to compensate for the lack of the
much desire style of Her Royal Highness.
The Duchess herself is reported to have summed up her life in a sentence:
"You have no idea how hard it is to live out a great romance."
The pair of Black and White Natural Pearl and Diamond
Earclips were made by Van Cleef & Arpels, New York, 1957.
Set with a black pearl measuring approximately 18.2 mm. and a white
pearl measuring approximately 18.1 mm., within borders of 32 pear-shaped
and 64 round diamonds weighing a total of approximately 9.25 carats,
mounted in white gold, signed Van Cleef & Arpels, numbered N.Y.
28396.
Accompanied by a Gubelin report stating that the pearls are natural,
natural color.
According to the archives of Van Cleef & Arpels in New York, these
earclips were made in 1957 and purchased the following year.
These earclips were worn by the Duchess on the most difficult day of
her life, the funeral of the Duke, which was attended by Queen Elisabeth
II. A picture taken on Saturday, June 3, one week after the death of
the Duke shows her at a window of Buckingham Palace wearing all her
pearls.
