The Princess Royal's Emeralds - The Royal Navy Negligé and the Yorkshire County Brooch

In this 1933 portrait, the Princess Royal is wearing three of her wedding presents. Suspended from two diamond chains are the diamond and emerald clusters composing the negligé which was the gift of the Royal Navy. All ranks contributed to the gift which was purchased from Messrs. Garrard. Centred above it is the diamond and emerald cluster brooch/pendant which was the gift of the County of Yorkshire. Purchased from Messrs. Garrard "the centre emerald is surrounded by 18 large diamonds and each of the other emeralds by 14 diamonds." All three elements were detachable.
These two pieces were later transformed into the emerald and diamond cluster necklace which was sold in 1960 at first of the three Christie's auctions of the Princess Royal's jewels for the sum of £36,000. It was later resold at Christie's Geneva in 1988 where it realized 825,000 SF. The square emeralds to the left and right of the central emerald were the emerald clusters from the Royal Navy's gift with the stones weighing 8.84 and 6.48 carats respectively. The central emerald weighed 13.03 carats while the two pear-shaped stones were 5.74 and 6.26 carats.

On her left wrist, she appears to be wearing the flexible oval link emerald and diamond cluster bracelet which was the gift of the Fellows and Members of the Royal Colonial Institute. It too was made by Messrs. Garrard.

In the 1970 sale the emerald and diamond brooch on her right shoulder "composed of a square cut emerald held by rose diamond claws which forms the centre of a diamond leaf panel of lozenge-shaped outline, flanked on each side by two smaller square-cut emeralds with rose diamond claws held in collet and leaf scroll frames" realized £7500.
The emerald and diamond bracelet on her right wrist is of unknown provenance.

The emerald diamond bracelet in the small picture to the right is another emerald jewel of the Princess Royal, composed of a rectangular emerald in a border of eight diamond leaves which forms the centre of the graduated drop-shaped link bracelet composed of pear-shaped emeralds in diamond single-row open frames, the centre cluster forms the clasp. Sold at auction in 1970 for £5200.

Prinzessin Royals Smaragd - Neglige von der königlichen Seeflotte - und die Brosche der Grafschaft Yorkshire

In diesem Porträt, aus dem Jahr 1933, trägt die Prinzessin Royal zwei ihrer Hochszeitsgeschenke:

Das Smaragd Neglige Collier: eine Diamanten Doppelkette, mit Diamanten und Smaragden, hat sie von der königlichen Seeflotte bekommen. Mit gespendetem Geld von Matrosen aller Dienstgraden wurde das Geschenk von Messrs. Garrard gekauft. Und die wunderbare Diamanten-Smaragd Brosche darüber (im Foto), hat sie von der Grafschaft Yorkshire bekommen. Die Brosche wurde auch von Messrs. Garrard erworben.
"Der grosse Smaragd in der Mitte ist von 18 Diamanten umgeben; die zwei anderen, von jeweils 14 Diamanten." Alle drei Teile können auseinander genommen und als Anhänger getragen werden.

Eine Smaragd-Diamanten Cluster Kette, die aus den Teilen dieser zwei Stücke enstanden ist, wurde, bei der ersten der drei Auktionen von Prinzessin Royals Juwelen im Christie's, 1960, für 36.000 englische Pfund verkauft. Dieses Stück wurde später, bei Christie's in Genf, für 825.000 SF weiter verkauft. Die zwei Smaragde, links und rechts vom grossen Smaragd, sind die Smaragd Clusters von der originalen Diamanten Doppelkette der königlichen Seeflotte. Diese sind 8.84 ct und 6.48 ct. Der grosse Smaragd in der Mitte ist 13.03 ct, und die zwei Tropfen-Förmige sind 5.74 ct und 6.26 ct.

Es scheint so, als ob sie, an ihrem linken Handgelenk, das flexibele Oval-Glieder Armband, mit Smaragd-Diamanten Clusters tragen würde, ein Geschenk der Fellows und Mitgliedern vom königlichen Kolonial Institut war. Auch dieses Stück ist von Messrs. Garrard hergestellt.
Die Smaragd-Diamanten Brosche die sie auf der rechten Schulter trägt, ("Rechteckig geschliffener Smaragd in Diamanten-Rosen gefasst, rechts und links, je einen kleineren Rechteck-Schliff Smaragd, mit Diamanten Rosen in Blattornamentik"), wurde 1970 bei Christie's für 7.500 englische Pfund verkauft. Die Provenance vom Smaragd-Diamanten Armband auf dem rechten Handgelenk ist unbekannt.

Das Smaragd-Diamanten Armband im kleinen Bild, auch aus dem Besitz der Prinzessin Royal, besteht aus einem rechteckigem Smaragd, es ist von 8 Diamanten Blättern umrahmt, als Zentrum eines gegliederten Armbandes. Jedes Glied ist ein Tropfen-Förmiger Smaragd, der von Diamanten umrahmt ist. Der Verschluss ist am großen, mittleren Glied. 1970 wurde das Stück für 5.200 englische Pfund, bei Christie's verkauft.

Die Diamant Halskette ist ein Teil des Hochzeitsgeschenks von Lord und Lady Inchcape.
