Princess Astrid of Norway| Duchess Pauline of Nassau Demi Parure with Bandeau and Brooch

This demi-parure was given to Princess Astrid of Norway by her grandmother, Princess Ingeborg of Sweden.
The  parure was made of gold and is set with baroque natural pearls in different shapes and semi-precious stones of red and green which are probably tourmaline, peridot, and rubellite mixed with other gems.
Princess Ingeborg, who thought it was costume and not real jewellery, wore it in the old style without a frame as a head jewel. When she presented it to her granddaughter, the young Princess wanted to do some alterations. The jeweller told her that the demi-parure was of real gold and semi-precious gems. Part of the five fringes of the brooch were used to create a pair of ear pendants with fringes and three stones were used on the bandeau to give it a higher center point.
Princess Astrid used it in public the first time in the early 1960s when she represented the royal family as first lady, and later at the wedding in Brussels of King Baudoin, her cousin to Dona Fabiola.

These outstanding jewels are from the early 19th century and go back to the Empire. We see pictured the Duchess Pauline of Nassau wearing the original demi-parure with the bandeau in her hair and the brooch pinned on the gown, as a devante de corsage.

Duchess Pauline of Wuerttemberg 1810-1856, was the 2nd wife of William, Duke of Nassau and mother of Princess Sophia of Nassau 1836 – 1913 Queen of Sweden. This was the connection which brought the jewels to Sweden. The demi-parure was never seen on her; probably the style was not in fashion and uncomfortable to wear.
The third son of King Oskar II of Sweden and Norway and Sophia of Nassau was Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland who married Princess Ingeborg of Denmark in 1897. One of the couple's daughter's, Princess Märthe, was the Crown Princess of Norway and mother of Princess Astrid.

A rare and wonderful story of a heirloom jewel over five generation which is worn still today by Princess Astrid, above in the picture on the right.
