ROYAL WEDDING PRESENTS

"The present which has been subscribed for by the inhabitants of West Cowes, is now to be seen in the window of Mr. S. Benzie, jeweller, by whom it was designed and worked.

It consists of a very handsome mirror of the Norman shape, 32in. high, by 24in. wide, with a massive silver edge, three inches wide, in antique repouseé work into which is introduced at the top the arms of Her Royal Highness balanced at the base by those of Prince Henry. In the centre on one side, on a silver shield, is the monogram and coronet of the Princess, and on the opposite side, those of Prince Henry. It is backed by a mat of Royal blue velvet, and rests in a slanting position on a silver crutch, which folds into the back to allow it to be fitted into a very handsome morocco case lined with blue velvet and with folding doors, on one of which is the Royal coronet and monogram faced by those of his Serene Highness Prince Henry."

"The Princess Beatrice was the recipient at Osborne on Wednesday of three wedding gifts from as many public bodies. The first was from the town of East Cowes, and consisted of four large volumes of classical music, bound in white ivory calf, and handsomely embossed with her Royal Highness's arms, and suitably inscribed within the cover. The present was made by Mr. Robertson, Chairman of the East Cowes Local Board, who was accompanied by the Rev. R. W. Burnaby, vicar, and a few other gentlemen. These books cost about £30.

The second gift was a large mirror, with semi-circular head bearing the arms of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry, its special value consisting of a chastely wrought border of silver filagree work three inches wide. The Mayor of Newport, Mr. Eldridge, and a deputation also attended and presented her Royal Highness with an edition de luxe of Staunton's Illustrated " Shakespeare " enclosed in an oak cabinet, surmounted by the borough arms." Woolwich Gazette - Friday 17 July 1885

These silver mirror is now come to the light again, at the Antiques Roadshow BBC Tewkesbury Abbey .

The hallmarks on the mirror are JR over SJ which are the marks of Judah Rosenthal and Samuel Jacob and the date letter for 1885 and London. The firm was founded in 1867 by Julius Loewe Rosenthal (or Judah Louis Rosenthal). He was in partnership with James Wiltshire until 1877. In 1881 he was joined in partnership by Samuel Jacob and the firm was listed as Rosenthal, Jacob & Co until 1892 when Judah continued the firm at 23 Southampton Street Fitzroy Square as Rosenthal & Co. The business was closed for bankruptcy in 1895. The firm specialized in mirrors.
