The fine diamond tiara, circa 1910 is of openwork kokoshnik-style tiara of neoclassical design featuring a meander motif and laurel leaves, millegrain-set throughout with circular- and single-cut diamonds, inner circumference approximately 240mm.
The resplendent diamond tiara, is a true marvel of German craftsmanship and regality. Created by the esteemed jewelry house Koch of Frankfurt, with artisanship further attributed to the workshop of Gebr. Kreuter in Hanau, the tiara embodies an exquisite laurel leaf and meander motif.
Its dazzling array of diamonds, estimated to weigh between 9.00 and 11.00 carats, is set within a fine frame, giving it a majestic height of approximately 50 mm and a weight of 74 grams. This regal diadem not only epitomizes elegance but also carries with it a rich legacy tied to German and Yugoslavian nobility.
Given to Princess Margarita of Baden on her wedding day to Prince Tomislav of Yugoslavia on June 6, 1957, this tiara became a symbol of her union with the Yugoslavian royal family. Princess Margarita’s wedding was celebrated with a blend of civil, Lutheran, and Serbian Orthodox ceremonies, attended by close family members and dignitaries, including her uncle, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Isabelle of France, Queen Friederika of Greece and King Simeon of Bulgaria. The bride, adorned in a classic white corded silk gown with a V-neckline, and a large myrtle tiaraand symbolizing the unity of her German and Yugoslav heritage.
Princess Margarita, known for her noble lineage as the daughter of Berthold, Margrave of Baden, and Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, was the eldest cousin of King Charles III and eldest niece of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Born at Schloss Salem on July 14, 1932, Margarita was the first great-great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria, an extraordinary title that reinforced her deep-rooted connections to European royalty. Her early life in Germany included a close connection to the school run by her father in partnership with Kurt Hahn, later moving to London in 1948 where she trained as a nurse.
In addition to the tiara, the photograph of Princess Margarita on her wedding day showcases other family heirlooms: large diamond and pearl earrings, and a magnificent brooch featuring a substantial cabochon gem encircled in a diamond setting. The earrings, first worn by Margarita, echo the timeless elegance of the tiara, adding to the bridal splendor of her ensemble.
Princess Margarita and Prince Tomislav had two children, Prince Nikola and Princess Katarina. The couple eventually settled in the United Kingdom, though they divorced in 1981 after a five-year separation. Margarita, who passed away on January 15, 2013, in Surrey, continued to support royal and Serbian charitable causes throughout her life. Her legacy is celebrated through her contributions and the heirloom jewels that encapsulate her unique position within European royalty.
