Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna's Emerald Jewels|Imperial Jewelry|Empress Marie AlexandrovnaAfter the murder of her husband, the Grand Duke Sergei in 1905, Elizabeth Fyodorovna completely turned away from all worldly things and founded a convent which she presided over. In order to finance it, she parted from all her jewellery, selling most of it . However, she returned the significant pieces of jewellery which belonged to her mother-in-law the Empress Marie Alexandrovna, including those which she received as wedding gifts to the House of Romanov, more exactly to her brothers-in-law, the Grand Dukes Alexei Alexandrovitch and Pavel Alexandrovitch (1860-1919), the last son of Czarina Maria Alexandrovna. As a result, the emerald parure which had belonged to the Empress Marie Alexandrovna was retured to Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovitch, the father of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, the younger. The complete parure consisted of this tiara, a large necklace of seven rhombic motifs which were set with a round emerald cabochon together with a hanging drop-shaped emerald cabochon, a pair of earrings with drop-shaped emerald cabochons which were fastened by large diamonds and a "Dévant de Corsage" which complemented the necklace in its design and style. This large brooch is set with a very big emerald in its upper part and a large drop-shaped emerald cabochon hung from it. In 1908, Grand Duke Pavel's daughter Maria Pavlovna (1890-1958) the younger, married the Swedish Prince Wilhem (1858-1950) and she received as a wedding present the complete emerald parure from her father. Concerning the disposal of her earthly goods. Ella returned the valuable items which belonged to her mother-in-law, the Empress Marie Alexandrovna, including those which she received as wedding gifts to the House of Romanov, more exactly to her brother-in-laws, the Grand Dukes Alexei Alexandrovitch and Pavel Alexandrovitch (1860-1919), the last son of Czarina Maria Alexandrovna. State and family portraits were given to the Alexander III Museum, "while objects and pcitures that Ella owned privately were distributed among her family, including a painting of St George and the Dragon by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, which she gave to her brother Ernie.""This information comes from Christopher Warwick's extensively researched biograph Ella Princess, Saint & Martyr. "It was, however, the sale of her impressive collection of
jewels, including, or so it was said, her wedding ring, that provided
Ella with the monies she required to buy the necessary land on which
to build her Obitel. The emeralds could be worne as single ornaments, the grandduchess wore it in 1908, when she lived in Sweden.
