Maria Alexandrovna

An extraordinary sapphire once property of the Russian imperial family was sold by Christies on May 18, 2011 for CHF6,259,000 .

This impressive brooch, which is set with a cushion-cut sapphire, weighing 130.50 carats, with an openwork rose-cut diamond surround and collet-set old-cut diamond frame, mounted in silver and gold, is a genuine masterpiece of Russian workmanship. The sapphire is of finest Mogok quality and of outstanding purity.

It was most likely made in the period of 1840 and it has a counterpart which is now in the possession of the British royal family. Queen Mary bought this second sapphire brooch after the death of the empress Maria Feodorowna in 1928 from her daughter Xenia Alexandrowna and it was worn by the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

In 1841, Princess Marie of Hesse became the bride of the future Tsar Alexander II and received these sapphires as part of her many wedding gifts. These particular ornaments were to be worn as clasps for the several strings of finest pearls she received for her wedding as well. The second cluster was intended to be a clasp too but fastening a wide pearl bracelet as a matching adornment.
During the day, the clusters would have been simply attached as brooches to the dresses but at night the ornaments sparkled in all their splendour set in tiaras as versatile centre pieces.
These clasp ornaments are an outstanding example of the finest gemstones that the Imperial family gave to the many young brides entering the Russian court. 6.0 cm
