Above jewels given to HRH Princess Marina of Greece & Denmark
when she married HRH The Duke of Kent, they include the fabulous diamond
and sapphire parure that was sadly broken when the present Duke sold
the tiara for death duties.
That hugh and beautiful diamond bow brooch she received from her Mother
as her wedding gift. It was orginally given to Grand Duchess Helen,
daughter of Grand Duchess Wladimir, when she married Prince Nicholas
of Greece.
The wedding of the Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece on 29
November 1934 was the most exciting and and glittering event of the
decade. The bride and bridegroom are her seen at Buckinham Palace after
the magnificent service in Westminster Abbey.
Standing, left to right:
Georg V, Princess Nicholas of Greece, the bride and bridegroom, Queen
Mary, Prince Nicholas of Greece.
Seated left and right
Princess Elizabeth and Lady Mary Cambridge.
When Princess Marina of Greece became the bride of Prince George, Duke
of Kent, in 1934, she indroduced a new elegance into the Royal Family.
Her gown was designed by Molyneux in silver French brocade, made in
Lyons, woven with English roses of medieval design, ist was the sort
of dress an englisch princess would have worn in the Middle Ages. The
material for the dress was so delicate that it was only sent over to
England about two weeks before the wedding.
The sleeves widened from shoulder to wrist, the cuffs faced with silver
brocade.
The flowing, billowing white tulle veil was five feet long, widening
at the bottom to ten feet. Holding this in place was a magnifiecent
diamond tiara presented to Princess Marina by the Lord Mayor and the
citizens of London. She wore two small bunches of orange blossom over
each ear.
This grand head ornament was worn by the Duchess on many subsequent
occasions, she loaned the tiara to her daughter, Princess Alexandra,
for her own wedding in 1963 and Prince Michael inherited the piece on
his mother`s death in 1968.
His bride, Baroness Marie Christine von Reibnitz, wore it at the wedding
reception at the Schwarzenberg Palais in Vienna on 30 June 1978.
Princess Michael has since worn the tiara in true Russian Koskoshnik
or cock`s comb style, against a black velvet halo edged by a diamond
reviere of 36 stones, also a wedding present of her father-in-law King
Georg V.
