Sapphire Head Jewel
of the Prussian Crownprincess
This aigrette could
be a part of the large Sapphire-Diamond-Parure, the pendant of one brooch
is exactly the size and colour. Those ornaments in the shape of an egret
plume which may be worn on a turban, hat or in the hair, and is typically
gemset or enameled, popular during the 17th and 18th centuries, and
then again in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Crownprincess wears also a natur pearl sautoir, an elongated necklace
popular during the 19th century, which drapes from the shoulders and
extends below the waist, sometimes suspending a tassel.
Pearls, long considered
as the "Queen of Gems", are a natural wonder treasured for
centuries by ancient and modern cultures all over the world. Until the
early 1900s, natural pearls were accessible almost only to the rich
and famous.
In 1917, Pierre
Cartier bought his landmark building on New York's Fifth Avenue from
Morton Plant for the amount of one hundred dollars and a pearl necklace
(valued at one million dollars) for Mr. Plant's wife. It was also during
this period that the demand for historical or "old world"
jewellery was at is all-time high in North America, partly caused by
marriages with members of aristocratic European families (Miss Consuelo
Vanderbilt and the Duke of Marlborough, Miss Field and Prince Brancaccio
just to name two).
