The Pearl and Diamond Tiara of the Infanta Eulalia of Spain

The Pearl and Diamond Tiara|Infanta Eulalia of Spain|Royal Wedding Gift

The Infanta Eulalia of Spain married her first cousin Antonio de Orléans y de Borbón, Infante of Spain and Duke of Galliera for dynastic reasons in 1886, shortly after the death of her brother King Alfonso XII. The ceremony was somber and full of sadness due to the mourning of the Court.
She was compensated with magnificent jewels.

Among the many wedding gifts she received were

- A superb pearl and diamond necklace from her parents-in-law the Duke and Duchess of Montpensier. The Duchess was her aunt - the only sister of Queen Isabel II of Spain
- A magnificent pearl and diamond tiara with a greek key base and a gallery composed of palmettes and pearshaped pearls, made by Ansorena (This jewel had been given to Queen María de las Mercedes, first wife of Alfonso XII as a wedding gift and returned to the king after her death), picture above
- An elaborate pearl and diamond tiara, on top - given to her by Queen María Cristina, her sister-in-law and it was made of 1422 diamonds of various sizes, 68 pearls and 7 big pear-shaped pearls, this tiara was created by the spanish jewellers del Mazo. It was exhibited in the premises of Marzo in Madrid in 1886.
- A ruby and diamond set of jewels of star motif, very popular at the time, from her fiancé.
- A pearl necklace with diamond clasp from her elder sister Infanta Isabel, probably the long string.....
- A magnificent diamond rivière, a large diamond stomacher and a pair of emerald and diamond earrings from her mother, ex-Queen Isabel II.

- Also from her mother came also a bird and a butterfly in pearls and rubies.

The most part of her collection was stolen during the Republic in Spain and Eulalia could only recover some items. The ruby star tiara was used at her weddings by her greatgranddaughter Beatriz de Orleans-Borbón in 1964 and by Elena Farini de Orleans-Borbón in 1999.( pictures will follow soon)

The Infanta brought a diamond and pearl tiara in the studio for the picture, her maid carried it "carelessly wrapped in a piece of muslin so that to the casual observer it looked like a rather large mob cap"- perhaps for security reasons. It was an exquisite piece of jewellery and probably worth a fortune, but that did not ease the pain for the wearer. She told it in her memories- after she tried it to wear -it would be torture do dance wearing something that weighed so much and the reply came back "Horrid thing... I've to wear it often at dances. Once I was waltzing with the Kaiser and I thought the music would never stop. Luckily he is a great talker and didn't notice how constrained I was.
What with the wight of his conversation and my tiara my poor head felt as if it were going to burst. When the dance was over I literally bolted out of the ball-room and made my maid find somethin simpler for me to wear for the rest of the evening."
