Archduchess Isabella of Austria Teschen | Diamond Fringe Tiara Kokoshnik | Habsburg Croÿ Royal JewelsOne of the most impressive jewels associated with Archduchess Isabella of Austria Teschen, née Princess Isabella of Croÿ (1856–1931), is her magnificent Diamond Fringe Tiara, a spectacular jewel composed of graduated diamond set rays rising to a dramatic central point. Born Princess Isabella Hedwig Franziska Natalie of Croÿ on 27 February 1856, Isabella was the daughter of Rudolf, Duke of Croÿ, and Princess Natalie of Ligne. On 8 October 1878 she married Archduke Friedrich of Austria, Duke of Teschen (1856–1936). The couple had eight daughters and one son. As the wife of one of the wealthiest members of the Habsburg dynasty, Isabella possessed an exceptional collection of jewellery. Historic photographs show her wearing the great Diamond Fringe Tiara together with diamond rivières, enormous pear shaped pearl pendants and other important jewels from the Teschen collection. The Diamond Fringe TiaraThe tiara is designed as a graduated series of narrow diamond set elements radiating upwards from a continuous diamond base. The tallest elements dominate the centre and decrease progressively towards either side, producing the characteristic silhouette of a fringe tiara or kokoshnik. Rather than consisting simply of individual diamond spikes, the principal graduated elements have pointed, elongated outlines and are densely set with diamonds. Between them are narrower diamond set rays, creating the exceptionally rich and almost continuous diamond surface visible in Isabella's portraits. The jewel belongs to the great tradition of nineteenth century diamond court tiaras created to produce maximum brilliance under artificial evening light. Historic photographs provide important evidence for its appearance in the collection of Archduchess Isabella. From Habsburg Teschen to Schloss HalbturnThe subsequent history of the jewel is closely connected with the descendants of Archduke Friedrich and Archduchess Isabella and with Schloss Halbturn. Halbturn itself has an extraordinary Habsburg Teschen history. Empress Maria Theresa gave the estate to her favourite daughter Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria and her husband Prince Albert of Saxony, Duke of Teschen. The Teschen inheritance subsequently passed through the Habsburg family until it came to Archduke Friedrich, Isabella's husband. Schloss Halbturn became one of their important residences. The property eventually descended through their family and today belongs to the Königsegg Aulendorf family. The Tiara at Schloss Halbturn in 2025More than a century after the historic photographs of Archduchess Isabella, the Diamond Fringe Tiara could once again be seen publicly. In 2025 the tiara was exhibited at Schloss Halbturn as part of the exhibition Verborgene Schätze aus dem Hause Habsburg. Its appearance was particularly significant because it demonstrated that this spectacular jewel of Archduchess Isabella had survived within the extended family. But an even greater surprise followed only one year later. A Habsburg Tiara Returns to a Family WeddingOn 29 August 2026, the historic tiara appeared not in an exhibition case but once again as it had originally been intended to be seen: worn by a bride. Countess Elena von Arco Zinneberg wore Archduchess Isabella's magnificent Diamond Fringe Tiara for her marriage to Count Géza von Königsegg Aulendorf at Sherborne Abbey in Dorset. Through Géza's descent from Archduchess Isabella, the wedding brought the jewel back into the history of the same family with which it had been associated more than a century earlier. The rediscovery provides an exceptional link between the magnificent Habsburg court jewellery visible in Isabella's historic portraits and a new generation of her descendants.
