Immer wieder gibt es Familien die nicht im Rampenlicht sind aber in
bestimmten Generationen die "golden girls" stellen, unter
den Prinzessinnen.
Die Familie Waldeck- Pyrmont hatte es mit den Töchtern des Fürsten
Georg Viktor von Waldeck-Pyrmont (1831–1893) und seiner ersten
Frau Prinzessin Helene Wilhelmina Henriette von Nassau-Weilburg (1831–1888),
Tochter von Herzog Wilhelm I. und seiner zweiten Frau Prinzessin Pauline
von Württemberg.
Prinzessin Emma heiratete den König Wilhelm III. der
Niederlande (1817–1890
Prinzessin Pauline Emma Auguste den Reichsgraf Alexis Carl
Ernst von Bentheim-Steinfurt
Prinzessin Georgina Henriette Marie den Prinz und späteren
König Wilhelm II. von Württemberg
und Helene Prinzessin von Waldeck-Pyrmont 1861-1922, heiratete
Prinz Leopold den Sohn von Königin Viktoria -
Am 27. April 1882 heiratete Prinzessin Helene von Waldeck-Pyrmont auf
Windsor Castle den Prinzen Leopold Georg von Großbritannien und
Irland, 1. Duke of Albany (1853–1884), vierte und jüngste
Sohn der englischen Königin Victoria I. und dem Prinzgemahl Albert
von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha. Aus der glücklichen Ehe gingen zwei
Kinder hervor:
Alice Mary Victoria Augusta Pauline (1883–1981)
8 1904 Prinz Alexander von Teck, 1. Earl of Athlone (1874–1957),
sowie Generalgouverneur von Kanada
Leopold Carl Eduard Georg Albert, Herzog von Albany und Herzog von Sachsen-Coburg
und Gotha (1884–1954)
8 1905 Prinzessin Viktoria Adelheid von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg
(1885–1970)
Ihr Mann starb am 27. März 1884 an der französischen Côte
d’Azur in Cannes an den Folgen seiner Bluterkrankheit, Knieverletzung
durch einen Sturz vom Pferd. Er wurde in Windsor beigesetzt. Vier Monate
nach seinem Tod kam ihr gemeinsamer Sohn Carl Eduard zur Welt, der somit
seit seiner Geburt der 2. Herzog von Albany war.
Prinzessin Helenes Hochzeitsgeschenke
Im Bild oben ist das Geschenk der Brautjungfern abgebildet, es handelt
sich um ein mit zwei facettierten Saphirtropfen und Diamanten besetztes
Armband. Herzförmig wurden die Saphire angeordnet und mit einer
Krone darüber arrangiert. Diamanten rahmen das stilisierte Herz
und bilden ein Wellenmuster auf der Oberfläche aus Gold.
Das Armband war später im Besitz von Prinzessin Sibylla von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha,
der Mutter des jetzigen schwedischen Königs und Enkeltochter der
Herzogin Helen, evtl war es ein Hochzeitsgeschenk als sie 1932 den zukünftigen
schwedischen Kronprinzen in Coburg heiratete Prinzessin Sibylla mit
dem Armband
Ein weiteres Hochzeitsgeschenk darunter, ein Rubin-Diamant Armband,
durchbrochen gearbeitet und mit den gekrönten Initialen als Mittelpunkt
wurde vom Golf Club of St Andrews überreicht.
It is not given to certain families to be in the limelight again and
again; however, in certain generations there are princesses who are
the “golden girls”. The Waldeck-Pyrmont family experienced
this with the daughters of HSH Georg Viktor of Waldeck-Pyrmont (1831-1893)
and his first wife, Princess Helene Wilhelmina Henriette of Nassau-Weilburg
(1831-1888), the daughter of Duke Wilhelm I and his second wife Princess
Pauline of Württemberg.
The second and eldest surviving daughter Princess Pauline Emma
Auguste wed Count Alexis Carl Ernst von Bentheim-Steinfurt;
the third eldest Princess Georgina Henriette Marie married prince
and later King Wilhelm II of Württemberg;
the fourth, Princess Emma married King Wilhelm III of the
Netherlands (1817-1890);
the fifth Princess Helene (1861-1922) married Prince Leopold,
Duke of Albany, son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg
and Gotha;
the sixth and youngest daughter Princess Luise married Alexander,
the second Prince of Erbach-Schönburg.
On 27 April 1882, Princess Helene married at St. George’s Chapel,
Windsor Castle, Prince Leopold George Albert Duncan of Great Britain
and Ireland, 1st Duke of Albany (1853-1884), the fourth and youngest
son of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert, the Prince Consort.
In the English Royal Family she was known as Princess Helen after her
marriage, perhaps to distinguish her from her sister-in-law.
The happy couple had two children:
Princess Alice Mary Victoria Augusta Pauline of Albany (1883-1981) who
married 10 February 1904 Prince Alexander of Teck, Earl of Athlone (1874-1957),
Governor-General of Canada (1939-1945)
Leopold Carl Eduard Georg Albert, Duke of Albany and Duke of Saxe-Coburg
and Gotha (1884-1954) who married 11 Oct 1906 Princess Viktoria Adelheid
of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1885–1970)
Unfortunately, the haemophilic Duke of Albany died in his room at the
Villa Nevada near Cannes on 27 March 1884. The previous day, he had
slipped at the bottom of the stairs at the Cercle Nautique yacht club,
injuring his right knee. Prince Leopold was taken to the villa at 5:00
pm where he was given morphine for the pain. As the evening progressed,
the pain worsened and more morphine was given. At 3:00 am, the Duke
had a convulsion, followed by others. The cause of death was not given
on the official death certificates from Cannes and London. Prince Leopold’s
biographer, Charlotte Zeepvat, has concluded that no one at the time
knew why the death occurred and that we never will.
The Duke of Albany’s posthumous son born four months after his
death was the second duke of Albany from birth.
