English Rose Diamond Pendant and Brooch|Prinzessin Kira| Grand Duchess Victoria Melita

The 'English Rose' diamond pendant and brooch, circa 1876.
Formed in the shape of a rose, the centre set with a pear-shaped diamond of 5,6ct within a surround of cushion-shaped, single-cut and rose diamond, mounted in silver and gold. Central diamond estimated to measures ca 12.35 x 9.45 x 5.80 mm K-L colour and VS2-SI1 clarity.Pendant mounting detachable, weight approximately 12 grams.

When the infant daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh was christened in the afternoon of January 1, 1877 at the San Antonio Palace, the names given to her were Victoria Melita.
The name was the wish of her grandmother and Melita is the name of the island, in both Greek and Latin, where the princess was born. Queen Victoria sent a gift to her granddaughter, as she was also her sponsor, and Her Majesty was represented at the christening by the Hon. Mrs Monson. A select party was afterwards invited to luncheon at the Palace. At the time of Victoria Melita's birth in 1876, she was tenth in the line of succession to the British throne.

The brooch, known in the family as the "English Rose", was with "Ducky" through her emotional extremes:  a first marriage to the Grand Duke of Hesse (worn on the bodice of her wedding dress above), a divorce, a re-marriage for love, the death of her daughter and finally fleeing revolutionary Russia to Finland. Her great love, Kirill, was then the last tsar and Victoria Melita the last tsarina, albeit one without a crown.

After her death the jewel passed to her daughter, Grand Duchess Kira Kirillovna of Russia (1909-1967). She wore it on two of her most emotionally significant dates in her life: when she was engaged to Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia on Christmas Day 1937 and on her wedding day. She placed the "English Rose" from her mother on her bridal gown, which was styled like a Russian court gown, in the middle of the corsage.
Upon her death, she bequeathed the brooch to her descendants. For the first time in its long history, the brooch is to be auctioned on 12 November 2014 by Sotheby's.
