"...in 1933 the "wedding of the year" took place in paris, when the heiress Barbara Hutton and Prince Mdivani were married in the city's Russian church"..." Cartier's most substantial commission came from the bride's father.

The necklace of fifty-three pearls that had formerly been worn by Marie Antoinette. It was descrided by the the press as one of the rarest strands of pearls ever sold by Cartier. But even the most aweinspiring piece of jewelry was not spared unorthodo treatment by Barbara Hutton. As Elsa Maxwell, dicovered one day when she asked after it: "Where are your wonderful pearls, Barbara?"

Barbara was suddenly glad to smile. "The goose has them" , she said "the goose?" questioned Elsa astonished. " Mr Cartier told me", she said, "that if the goose swallowed my pearls they would come out with a brighter luster."

In the Archive of Cartier are recordet Miss Barbara Hutton's Pearls beeing restrung and altered many times - also in lenght.

Auctioned at Christie's in 1999 for ~$1.5 million.

She ordered from Jean Patou... the wedding dress for the church wedding. Photos of the wedding dress appeared in newspapers around the world: it was made of ivory satin, with sleeves gathered at the shoulders. This included a lace veil with a light shell crest edged with diamonds. The diamonds formed small flower branches, thus repeating the flower pattern of the lace.

- civil marriage –

She wore a necklace of uncut diamonds, a gold anklet, and the platinum engagement ring with a black pearl. Alexis bought it with the money he got from Louise Van Alen's [his ex-wife's] settlement.

They got so many wedding gifts that Barbara had to rent another suite at the Ritz to accommodate them.
Prince David Mdivani presented the newlyweds with a diamond-set Cartier watch.
Serge's gift consisted of a gold cosmetic case decorated with rubies for Barbara and gold cufflinks for his brother.
Nina Huberich presented Barbara with some ceremonial Georgian robes lined with golden beadwork; Sert had painted them a landscape of the Spanish sea coast.
Then there were earrings set with diamonds and rubies, diamond bracelets, the inevitable gold toilet sets and silver tea sets, heavy suitcases containing silver cutlery from the time of George III, baccarat crystal and Limoges china. Franklyn Hutton gave Barbara a precious necklace of pearls and his son-in-law a motorboat...
The bride presented her groom with a set of polo ponies and oriental pearl cufflinks. Upon learning that he had received similar gifts from Louise Van Alen, Barbara bought him twice as many polo ponies. Alexis presented Barbara with a pearl necklace and several months later a jade necklace for which he paid $40,000 - all from Barbara's money - but which, as it later turned out, was worth considerably less. The EF Huttons gave Barbara a diamond brooch in the shape of a polo pony.

Early 1951, dinner with Michael Wilding, and Stewart Granger and Jean Simmons, who had just married -

She arrived on time and was beautifully dressed up. In addition to a glittering diamond ring, however, she had only put on a necklace of, as you might think, black glass beads. This surprised Granger a little, knowing that she had a large collection of jewels to call her own. After dinner… she noticed the pretty engagement ring Jean was wearing and asked to have a closer look. "As she surveyed our slightly flawed stone," Granger wrote in his autobiography, "she made sure that Jean was suitably dazzling with the blue-and-white diamond she wore herself. Then she noticed the rather unassuming pearl necklace I had given Jean for their wedding and told Jean she thought it was cute. Barbara then asked her if she liked the necklace she wore herself. I tried to kick Jean in the legs under the table, knowing what was coming, but Miss Hutton was quicker. She took off the string of black glass beads and threw them across the table in Jean's face. They weren't glass beads at all. It was black pearls, a unique and priceless necklace… I felt like kicking her ass because I didn't like the way she humiliated Jean”. - Footnote : Barbara's black pearl necklace was one of her most prized pieces. It originally belonged to Anne of Austria, Queen of France and mother of Louis XIV - It was black pearls, a unique and priceless necklace… I felt like kicking her ass because I didn't like the way she humiliated Jean”. - Footnote : Barbara's black pearl necklace was one of her most prized pieces.
