Princess Louise of Saxe-Coburg Princess of Belgium Sapphire Jewels

The sapphire tiara was made with a sapphire collar of Louise of Belgium, Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha bought by the QUEEN in 1963.

In 1907 there was a scandal at the Belgian Royal Court, and that's why the family has so few historic jewels. Louise, daughter of King Leopold II, who left her husband, Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, had so many debts that her creditors wanted to take possession of her share of her mother's inheritance. It was about the jewels Queen Marie-Henriëtte left her in 1902. Neither her husband nor her father wanted to pay her debts, and that's why the jewels were put up for auction in Brussels.
It was a case the press wrote about for months. The Belgian people were against their King, an unfaithful husband, who neglected his wife, Queen Marie-Henriette, for years! But a bigger scandal for the Belgian people was his attitude towards his daughters. He disinherited two of them. Stéphanie, widow of Rudolph, son of the emperor of Austria, married for the second time without his permission. Louise should have stayed with her husband. Clementine stayed at her father's side until he died.

Until the last moment a lot of people hoped the King would decide not to sell his wife's jewels. They were estimated at £9200, according to a contemporary report in a British magazine. Leopold only withdrew a lace veil the Queen received at her wedding from the women of Brussels. The jewels were sold.

Sold were a large diadem in the shape of ostrich feathers, covered with pink diamonds, a gift from the people of Brussels to Queen Marie-Henriette on occasion of her silver wedding anniversary [sold for $30,000 wrote the Valentine Democrat" (Valentine, NE) dated Oct. 31, 1907]; two bracelets with miniatures of her father and mother; an opal brooch with diamonds; a set of Hungarian earrings; a bracelet with emeralds and diamonds; a brooch with the portrait of the King on ivory, covered with diamonds; a diamond bracelet and two sets of earrings with turquoises and diamonds. Also a number of precious fans were put up for auction. These were made of ivory and covered with pearls, gems or mother-of pearl.
