Maharana, Mahrawal, Maharwat, Maharho, Nizam, Mahatar, Nawab, Khan,
Magnificent Emerald Drop and Diamond Necklace and Ear Pendants
Above, Maharani Sita Devi, a scarlet woman of Indian royalty who
became known as the subcontinents Mrs Simpson. in
case of her strong personality and her passion for jewels. From the
Baroda treasury she received innumerable Indian jewels that dated
back to Mughal times.
In 1943 she became the second wife of Sir Pratapsinh Gaekwad and
moved much of the famous Baroda jewels collection to bank vaults in
Europe and her home in the south of France.
From these Sita Devi extracted the emerald and diamond beads and
had them mounted by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1949 into the most magnificent
fringe necklace and pair of ear-pendants.
The old version on left, it may be have been brooken up and rebuild
new in Paris, see the sketch above of the orginal design for the platinum-set
necklace.
Rebuild the Hindou Necklace, its fringe of 13 emerald drops weighed
a total of approximately 150 carats. Suspended from a panel of pavé-set
diamonds and decorated with Mughal-cut emerald beads, the design transformed
the stones into a fluid lotus flower.
The ear-pendants of polished octagonal and drop-shaped emeralds each
suspend a diamond briolette weighing approximately 20 carats. These
precious stones set within a circle are said to gather and radiate
cosmic energies to mystically favour the one they adorn. The Hindou
Necklace has remained in private hands since it first appeared for
sale in Monte Carlo in 1974 at an auction organised by Crédit
Mobilier of Monaco, where the Maharani resided since the 1960s.
Julian and Jaques Arpels were frequently visitors of the homes of
the Maharani and the Maharaja of Baroda and they designed also a pair
of pearls and diamonds
ear- pendants made in the 50th for the Maharani
