Saphir Halsband
| Collier der Königin Alexandra von England
Königin Alexandra bekam zu ihrer Silberhochzeit 1888 von ihrem
Schwager, dem Zaren Alexander III. dieses sehr flexible und reich mit
Diamanten besetzte Saphir-Halsband geschenkt.
Das Halsband besteht aus acht Saphire Cabochons in guter Farbe, die
je einen Rahmen aus Diamanten haben und die Glieder der Kette sind ineinenader
verdrehte Diamant besetzte Elemente:
Jeweils mittig, zwischen zwei Gliedern, ist immer ein Element mit einem
grossen und 2 mittleren Diamanten, die als Ornament vertikal gesetzt
sind, die Zwischenräume sind mit 4 kleine Diamanten ausgefüllt.
Eine Öse und ein verdecktes Scharnier ist zu erkennen, der Schmuck
liess sich sicher verändern, entweder kürzen als enger Choker,
eng anliegend am Hals zu tragen oder evtl auch als zwei Armbänder.
Ausgesucht haben dürfte es die Schwester der Begünstigten,
Zarin Maria Feodorovna, bei einem der St. Petersburger Hofjuweliere.
Ihre Liebe zu Juwelen ist legendär und ihr feiner Geschmack und
die enge Bindung zu Alexandra drückt sich in diesem Geschenk besonders
aus.
Kurz zurvor hatte die Tsarin das erste Ei, von Faberge gefertigt, erhalten,
sie war so entzückt, das sie fortan bei der Firma bevorzugt einkaufte.
Es könnte sich unter Umständen um ein frühes Schmuckstück
der Firma handeln, denn entgegen der anderen St Petersburger Firmen,
wurde bei Faberge mit dieser mit vielen Diamanten besetzten eleganten,
Fassart bekannt und beliebt, es ist aber nicht überliefert.
Die Tochter der Königin, die Herzogin von Fife, erhielt das Halsband
nach dem Tod ihrer Mutter und vermachte es wiederum ihrer Tochter Lady
Maud Duff-Carnegie, Gräfin von Southesk deren Nachlass 1946 versteigert
wurde.

Princess of Wales Silver Wedding Anniversary gifts - 1888 :
The presents which were presented to the Prince and Princess of Wales
were on display in the Indian Room at Marlborough House. Amongst the
many gifts were items of jewellery which included:
-A large cross of rubies and diamonds, the gift of HRH the Prince of
Wales
-A brooch set in silver of orange blossom, the gift of Her Majesty the
Queen
-A fine sapphire and diamond collar, composed of eight cabochon
sapphires of fine colour, with single row diamond borders in the form
of oval clusters, and held by diamond panels of twisted bar design the
centre formed of three single diamonds set vertically, the gift of the
Emperor and Empress of Russia. Made by Bolin.
-A sapphire and diamond brooch, the gift of the Duke and Duchess of
Edinburgh
-A diamond tiara, formed of rays of brilliants graduated in size set
in silver, the gift of 365 ladies personally acquainted with the Princess
of Wales

The Scotsman 21 June 1946 reported:
Among jewels of the late Princess Maud, Countess of Southesk, to be
sold at Christie’s June 26, a sapphire and diamond collar that
was formerly worn by Queen Alexandra.
The sapphire and diamond collar, which had been the gift of the Czar
of Russia to Queen Alexandra and bequeathed by her to the Duchess of
Fife, brought £4900.
The Cabochon and sapphire
choker necklace was auctioned again in Oct, 1986 NY for $825,000 and
following details about the design and sapphires:
Designed as a line of seven (!) clusters, each set with a cabochon Kashmir
sapphire of similar design with a cabochon Cambodian sapphire weighing
approximately 72,43ct(total), surroundes by old mine-cut diamonds, separated
by old mine and rose-cut diamond links, mounted in silver and gold, together
with an extension and a cabochon Cambodian sapphire weighing approximately
5,33cts,. 12 and 1 3/4in ca 1880- each cluster detaches, the mounts
holding the clusters are fitted with hoops from which pendants may be
suspended.
