4 Brooches Brilliants & Pearls | Empress Eugenie| French Crown Jewels

The shoulder brooch of two circular elements each with a large pearl at the centre which is surrounded by eight large, cushion-shape diamonds.
Each element is flanked by a small volute with a pearl drop.
The upper part has larger stones, while the smaller lower part has larger pearls drops.
Both parts can be separated and worn as individual brooches.

On the occasion of Napoleons II's marriage in 1853 with the future Empress Eugenie, Kramer received an order to make four shoulder brooches from available stocks of the so-called Diamants de la Couronne de France as parts of a great pearl parure.

The other parts, like the great diadem were ordered from Gabriel Lemonnier.
These shoulder brooches are reminiscent of earlier forms, in use since the 17th century. The new imperial court wore the jewels of the Bourbons but gave them a Historicist form.

This brooch has a "1" engraved on the reverse of both sections which suggests that this was the first of the four brooches.
This shoulder brooch may be that which is shown top left in the original 1887 auction catalogue.
During the auction, one of the brooches was sold to Messrs. Bapst. The case for this brooch bears the company name "J Bapst & Fils".

The four Brooches were sold in four lots for a total of Fr 114 200 on 13 May 1887:

Empress Eugenie's 4 Pearl And Diamond Set shoulder brooches of the same model had a total of 266 brilliants weighing 166 11/32carats, 520 rose-cut diamonds and 28 pearls weighing 1496gr was employed.

It is probable that one of these four brooches was bought by the Museum of Louvre in 2015 from the Royal family of Bulgaria.

The pearl brooch was worn in public once by Duchess Sophie of Wuerttemberg>> at her pre-wedding ball in 1962.

And the largest of the brooch, which was bought from Sir Ogden Goelet was in the inheritance of his wife Mrs Goelet, when she died, she left it to her daughter May Goelet, the Dowager Duchess of Roxburghe and later it was worne by her daughter-in-law Mary the Duchess of Roxburghe.
