In 1923, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons, the future Duchess of York, received an array of splendid gifts for her wedding. Among these was a remarkable sapphire and diamond brooch. This exquisite piece was bestowed upon her husbands aunt Princess Royal, Princess Louise (daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) and her daughter Maud.
The brooch features a central sapphire encircled by a border resembling a laurel wreath, adorned with glistening diamonds. Additional diamonds are intricately set in a foliate style on either side of the wreath. Contemporary newspapers lauded it as "an exquisite brooch adorned with fine diamonds and sapphires."
During the 1920s, the Queen Mother held a deep affection for this brooch, often elegantly pinning it to her hat. However, as the 1930s rolled in, its popularity waned. Regrettably, its presence faded from public view, and its whereabouts remain a mystery to this day.
