Imperial SAPPHIRES Jewels of the Romanovs - Sapphire brooches | Romanov-Brooch |Sapphires of the Tsar

Romanov jewellery and gemstones -
Tsar Peter I. has founded in 1719 the State Diamond Fund of Russia, into which each Russian monarch has handed down an individual number of pieces of jewellery.
The vast collection contains the finest works of jewellery besides all kinds of precious stones. The most important coloured stones are set in very similar brooches which are giving more the impression of a jewelled frame to someone.
The settings are solid gold mounts which are partly worked up with silver. All sapphires are set in clusters with a diamond outline. Some of them are additionally spangled with a large number of small rose cut diamonds which are set in a filigree openwork gold mounted, or are additionally set around the center stone - very typical for Russian design.
In the book A History of the Crown Jewels of Europe, Lord Twining has described the pieces simply very short, but most of its descriptions contains the number and the weight of the used stones. Unfortunately he is not giving any notes about the dates of origin.

The large Ceylon sapphire is one of the most important and most beautiful stones of the collection. The stone is extremely pure with just a few minor blemishes in its center, the surface is very unusual faceted with 100 hexagonal facets. The high domed mount is set with numerous rose cut diamonds which are set in a filigree open work mount. The undulating design is highlighting the cut of the sapphire. Alexander II. has bought the sapphire in 1862 at the Exposition Universelle in London.
